“How Long Will I Need Therapy?”: Things to Consider

If you're thinking about booking your first session with Kindred Roots Therapy, you might be wondering, "How long will this take?" It's a totally legit question because therapy can feel like a bit of a mystery ride. While there's no one-size-fits-all answer, here are some things to consider when it comes to how long your therapy journey might last.

What's Bugging You: The stuff that's bothering you and how intense it is can impact how long therapy lasts. If it's something specific and you already have a general awareness of it, you might get some clarity and strategies in just a few sessions with the right therapist. But if you're dealing with deep-seated issues like long-term depression or complicated past traumas, it might be a more extended road.

Therapy Style: Different therapists use different approaches, and that can affect how long therapy lasts. Some of the methods utilized by our Kindred Roots therapists are usually shorter-term and target specific problems. Others can take a while and focus on digging deep and personal growth. You and your therapist can decide together which modalities would be most effective in your particular situation.

Your Goals Matter: What you want to get out of therapy can influence how long you'll be in it. If you've got a specific goal in mind and you're making progress, it might not take too long. But if you're looking to make some big life changes and discover yourself along the way, be prepared for a more extended journey.

Your Effort Counts: How much effort you put into therapy matters too. If you're willing to do homework, practice what you learn, and book and show up for sessions regularly, you might speed up the process.

Progress Check-Ins: You and your Kindred Roots therapist will regularly chat about how things are going. If you're making strides and meeting your goals, that's a good sign that you might wrap things up sooner.

Life Happens: Sometimes, life throws curveballs, and unexpected stuff can pop up while you're in therapy. It might mean you need more support or that therapy needs to go on a bit longer. You may even decide that you don’t need it anymore and take an extended break.  But let’s face it, life can be complicated and a few months down the road it’s possible you’ll decide to book a session or two just to help get back on track or to work something out.

So, there's no set timeline for therapy—it's different for everyone. The key is to chat openly with your therapist, about what you're aiming for and how things are going but also to trust yourself and your instincts. Together, you can figure out a plan that suits you.

Remember, taking the step to seek help is a brave move for your mental well-being, and everyminute you spend trying to understand yourself so that you can make the most of your life will be time well spent.
